FAQ: What is the difference between lifestyle and documentary photography?

Lifestyle photos aim to tell a story but involve a higher level of curation and creative control, e.g. staged poses. These photos require more interaction between the photographer and subject.

Documentary photography takes a more journalistic approach, where the photographer aims to avoid direct influence, i.e. the photographer is a 'fly on the wall'.

My approach

While I will often approach a session committed to one style or the other, I love to start a session documentary style, capturing moments from afar. Then I'll move in and heavily support through posing and prompts. Whatever you aim to capture, we can work together to design your session.
